A little sweet, a little sour...

I came across this song Mera Jahan - Taare Zameen Par, while watching the movie. There was a comment that it mildly resembles the golom song but I guess it resembles "Sting - Desert Rose".

Here are both the songs. Some one please tell me that it's not my imagination running wild :-)

The weird duck

This one recently hit the news for its weird appearance. Some attribute it to the recent oil slick from the tanker that crashed close by and scientists argue the bright patches to be total internal reflection on surface of the water.

An interesting news clip on this rare phenomenon is available to the interested reader by clicking here.

On marriage

I happened to hear this conversation between my grandmother and our neighbour back at our village. This neighbour(a young girl), probably 18 or 19 years old was getting married next month.
My grandmother asked her why she was marrying that particular guy and she said-" See, he has two cows, six hen and four ducks at home. I can play with them when he is away for work."

I am stunned!

Breathe

Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave but don't leave me
Look around and chose your own ground
For long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be

Run, rabbit, run
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race toward an early grave.

By the Beach-1

Its been raining in Chennai and the weather has been pleasant for the past few weeks. This one is the fourth beach I'm trying out in Chennai. I have been to quite a few beaches but the ones in Chennai are not what I wished it to be. As expected, they are crowded and dirty. I guess its mainly because one can't smell the sea in Chennai and its totally void of any birds except for crows and the sea breeze feels just like the wind everywhere else in Chennai. Its also noisy that you can't hear the waves splashing either.

I took a few snaps using my friends camera.

Some Movies

Some movies are great. This time I got to watch Apocalypto. It was saddening to watch it and in the end left me with a strong sense of dislike towards human civilization. The next morning I woke up with a bad headache. The one thing that brightened the day is this picture that I came across, on the internet. It's good to see that some mammals get along well though humans do not.

Rambling

Watched quite a few(around 8) of Meg Ryan's and other movies this month. But then two others turned out to be great. Two beautiful movies -"Under the The Tuscan Sun" and "Before Sunrise". The first one is simply great for its maturity and lack of nonsense and the second one for its mixture of intelligent and unintelligent dialogue , which makes it real.

First of April

I haven't played any big pranks (April fool) on anyone for many years. This time it was different. My unsuspecting victim was my own uncle who works as an accountant in Dubai, has come home to India on vacation. He has an 18 year old daughter and a 12 year old son.

I haven't talked to him for some time and I was sure he wouldn't recognize my voice. I ring him up from my mobile phone.

Me: Hello?
Uncle: Hello.

Me: I want to talk to _daughters_name_
Uncle: Who are you?

Me: I am her boy friend.
Uncle: What!?

Me: Boy friend.
Uncle(visibly angry): I am her father.

Me: Nice to talk to you, can I speak to your daughter?
Uncle: Who are you?

Me: I am _fictitious_name_
Uncle: Where from?

Me: I am from _some_other_place_

Uncle: Where exactly?
Me: Take a left turn from the central junction

Uncle: There are many junctions, which one?
Uncle: What do you do?

Me: Why do you care, I need to speak to your daughter.
Uncle: This is not her house, this is _someone_elses_house

Me: Whose house?
Uncle: This is some_other_girls_house

Me: Can I talk to her?
Uncle: I have 5 daughters and I know how to deal with you.

Me: 5 daughters! What are their names?
Uncle(rude sounding): I have also come after your age, I know what the 'disease' is with you boys.I am a psychologist.

Me: Really? What medicine do you have?
Uncle: I have a caller ID installed. I will find you and get you.

Me: Try your best, we will see.
Uncle: Okay, I am done talking with you.

Me: Wait!
Uncle (pauses):

Me: I want to talk to your daughter

Uncle(bangs the phone) and terminates the call.

I call him up exactly two minutes later. He looks the number on his caller id.

Uncle: You again? What do you want.
Me: Uncle, this is Sarad.

Uncle: What, which Sarad.
Me: Your brother's son.

Uncle: It was you, you stupid ^&@#$#! (I deserved that).
Uncle: You scared the hell out of me. I had summon'ed my daughter and was questioning her. She was telling that if it was her boy friend, he would have called her on her mobile phone. Why call on the common phone?

We exchanged some pleasantries and hung up.

Random rant

The days are more exciting. Got to watch a whole bunch of movies -'Music & Lyrics', 'Bride and Prejudice' & 'Flavors' both Indian English movies, 'Shall we dance', 'Coyote Ugly', 'The Pursuit of Happyness', this is a very good un-orthodox movie starring Will Smith .
More than that, the level of doing useful work has come up from 1% to 10%. That hopefully gives me the right to brag how busy I have become and serve as an excuse for staying out of blog world :-)

The Euro English

More of those weird e-mail forwards :-)

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl

Math Class

This is about my first math class where I'm presently studying. I have taken a coursework on discrete mathematics. A lady teacher was assigned to teach us. Since it is the first day, I jovially hopped off to university. I look up the notice board, find the class room and the course timing.

The discrete math class is to start at 11:20 A.M but at that time, the hall is occupied by the previous class and the teacher is still teaching. Another ten minutes pass, she is still on with her class. I decided to find out what's taking her so long. I go ahead and knock on the door.

Math Teacher: Yes?
Me: Could you please come out? I would like to have a word with you.

She comes out.

Math teacher: What do you want?
Me: Mam, the math class is at 11:20 A.M?

Math teacher: Sorry, but the time table was revised today, I had started the math
class at 10:30

me: Okay, thank you.

I wait outside till she finishes her class, she finally comes out and sees me waiting. I take out a piece of paper on which I had written my timetable and told her that my math class was colliding with some other class since she had revised the time table.

She thinks, it is my teaching time table!

So, she decides to take me to the course co-ordinator to sort out the time table,
another faculty in charge of time table's. However, the co-ordiantor was not at desk.

Math teacher: Do this, talk with co-ordinator and call me.

She first gives me her mobile number and then her home phone number :)

Some how, on that day I am unable to meet the course co-ordinaror. In the mean time she meets the Head of Department (HOD) and tells him that there is this other teacher(me) with which her class is colliding.

The HOD is totally at loss in identifying the other math teacher and finally tells her not to alter her time table.

The next day...I was in another class when the math teacher rings me up on my mobile phone. Since I am in class I am unable to attend it. Once the class was over, I returned the call.

Math Teacher: I called you but you didn't pick up.
Me: I was in class. ( She thought I was teaching the class. )

Math teacher: Sir, I met the HOD, my schedule cannot be revised.

I wondered why she was calling me 'Sir'. Certainly, I have not been knighted. At this point,I realize that she had mistaken me for a math teacher!

Me: Mam, I am not a staff but a student.

She doesn't say another word for the next 5 seconds and then she hangs up.

I call her two minutes later.

me: I am a student, I would like to join the course you are teaching.
Math teacher: Alright, you can join.

Later she told that she was in a hurry that she misunderstood me for a math teacher.

A student mistaking a student for a teacher, quite possible. A teacher mistaking a student for a teacher :-))

A train tale

I love trains and I love train travel. I have stayed close to the railway tracks for most part of my life. My home, my college where I graduated, my present college, all are adjacent to the railway track, each one closer than the previous.

This is about a short trip to Kolkata, last month. I took a train to Howrah. Much of the journey was eventless except for an 11 or 12 year old ragamuffin ragpicker kid who entered the compartment at Bhubaneswar train station. His agility and keen observation immediately caught my attention. He went under the seats and in no time extracts 12 empty plastic water bottles. He realises that 12 bottles are too many for him to carry out, all in one strech. He reflects for a moment and then goes back hunting under the seats. Curious to see what he was upto this time, I strained my neck and in a few moments, he magically produces a plastic cover from beneath one of the seats! Cool- but he figures out that he can't fit 12 bottles in one plastic cover. Ah-bad luck I thought.

A minute later, I decided to check on the boy. Much to my surprise he had torn one side of the plastic cover into one single plastic sheet. He was busy uncorking the bottle's cap, putting the plastic in between and re-corking the cap. Soon, he was done with all 12 bottles, picks the plastic sheet to which all the 12 bottles are now attached, puts it on his shoulder and walks off.

That is something that I wouldn't have thought of in a million years. The mind of a child!

Food

I thought, my Hindi was the worst amongst all the Hindi speaking people in the world. But that's not quite true.
It was our undergrad days, it's afternoon and my friend decides to break the daily canteen food routine and goes out to the nearest Sardar restaurant. He didn't seem interested in looking up the menu. Anyway, finally the Sardar comes to get the order

Sardar: "Kya kayega?"
Friend: " Ullu ke Parathe".

Sardar(confused): "Kya?"
Friend: " Ullu ke Parathe, dena."

Sardar: " Aloo ke Parathe?"
Friend: " dena, dena".

Sardar smilingly goes off and gets him - Aloo ke Parathe.

Mr.M pays us a visit

It was the final semester of under graduation and everything was well set. Sleep was good, the weather was better, since I slept all afternoon. Course works were fewer and the semester project was well on target.

Did I mention the food? The food was excellent. I took lunch and dinner at my friend’s house. Dinner is usually much more eventful that lunch. We would have dinner in front of the television just in time for the 9:00 PM, HBO or Star Movies movie. What to watch was never an issue. My friend would have watched it, anyway. The records of the near by movie rental shows that he had so far rented about 1000 movies under his account.(Read as - all the movies in the shop)

Anyway, dinner is usually very satisfying and the movie ends sometime around 11:00 PM. Now that I am lazy and drowsy to walk all the way back (a 5 minute walk)home, I normally end up sleeping on their extra bed. Protocol is that, while I leave in the morning, I lock the front door and throw the key back in through the window (That’s right, he won't loose his sleep for anything in the world). This went on for a few days until one day, I left the door ajar and threw the key back in. In my sleeping frenzy, I forgot to lock the door.

My friend sleeps in the hallway; next to the kitchen. He is a sound and heavy sleeper. For some reason, he opens his eyes momentarily and sees a cute little baby monkey walking down the hall. That is real cute. I like my dream!, he murmurs and goes back to sleep. Soon enough, he sees an entire family of monkeys march by, into the kitchen. It's a dream, alright! and off he goes to sleep again....but soon enough he is awakened by weird noises and crashing of utensils in the kitchen. Luckily, this time he gets up and decides to investigate.

He finds the front door open, that's not good! Next he rushes into the kitchen. Now there are 8 monkeys in the kitchen- papa monkey, mama monkey, granny, grandpa, cousins, relatives and of course the cute little one. They had ransacked the bananas that we had stocked for the next few days. Rice was spilled all over, cooking oil was spilled, the horse gram was spilled, half the utensils were on the floor, the flour was spilled and some of the monkeys had painted their face painted white in it. The contents of the waste basket were spilled and the whole place stunk. The only exception to this is our cute little baby monkey, which was sitting on the lid of an earthen pot with its hands over its eyes - as if to say that it saw no evil or did no evil.

My friend is shocked and in a fix. He had to get rid of the monkeys. Would they leave if he politely asked them to? He was sure that wouldn't work. He makes a banana trail of what was left, all the way to the front door, only to find more monkeys come in and run off with the bananas. Now being at the end of his wits, he picks up a blunt knife and starts 'shooing' at the monkeys as in a swordfight. That seemed to be working! He manages to frighten all of them out. He is now pleased with his skills, that he further tries 'shooing' the monkeys with the knife off the compound, only to realize the entire neighborhood was watching the proceedings with great enthusiasm.

Next, my other friend who was out that night got a shocker when he saw the state of the kitchen. He figures out that I had left the front door open!

I was unaware of the incident until another friend told me, that they weren't very happy with what I did, leaving the front door open. I am also told that it took them one good hour to clean up the mess. I wisely decided to skip lunch. By dinner, things had settled and I got away with a mild warning.

No hope

This is a lovely poem about a young girl with childish infatuation. It is written by an Internet friend whom some of us know as Paris2k.

It reads as follows:

Cast aside your childish infatuation
or childish tears will come your way
See not in me what you desire
I'm but a man who's gone astray

No hope you'll find in my heart
No warmth is in my cheek
Oh how I wish that things were different
but I am not what you seek

Your infinite smile betrays you
no notion of the fact
That this charm you see before you
is but a cold and empty act

No hope you'll find in my heart
No warmth is in my cheek
Oh how I wish that things were different
but I am not what you seek

So move along my little beauty
I hope you'll find once what you seek
but speak no more 'bout how you love me
You know not of what you speak

No hope you'll find in my heart
No warmth is in my cheek
Oh how I wish that things were different
but I am not what you seek

He and his friend went further to tune this poem and record it. I find this song fascinating for its brilliant tuning and beautiful vocals. The mp3 can be downloaded and played from here .

and it dawns

I can't stand the gloom and darkness on Moi's blog:-)

Its time to lighten things up. Anyway, here is my favourite dialogue in all three parts of the movie, the Lord of the Rings. This one is from the 'Two Towers'.

Frodo Baggins: I can't do this Sam.

Sam Gamgee: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding on to Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.
